Birthday Sandwich

Since D's B-day was yesterday and mine is tomorrow, we celebrated today (sandwich day). Some of our friends met us at Cowgirl, which is one of our favorite restaurants in the city. Cowgirl serves BBQ, Tex-mex AND comfort food (such as mac and cheese, chicken fried steak, etc), which are ideal menu offerings for 2 kids from Texas who love to eat. Unfortunately, I'm trying to not clog my arteries for the next few weeks and didn't go for my usual pulled pork plate. Instead, I ordered a grilled vegetable salad. And before you start rolling yours eyes, I just want to say that it was really tasty. Plus, I need to eat healthier foods in preparation for the upcoming month of vacation gluttony. Besides, it's never a bad idea to be conscious of what kinds of foods you put in your body. The highlight of the meal was the baked potato ice cream, (which I did indulge in):

This is actually lump of vanilla ice cream covered in cinnamon, whipped cream, pistachios and a lump of "butter"cream frosting. Imagine that there are 2 candles sticking out of it. We devoured our baked potato dessert before I remembered to snap a photo. I found this one on the internet.

Happy Birthday (soon to be) Hubby

Daryl is celebrating his birthday by working up at a school in the Bronx today, and he just called me and said that someone had stolen the cash in his wallet. It was only 50 bucks or so, but still...that's lousy. Luckily they didn't take the whole wallet, because it would have been a nightmare to get everything reissued before our trip(s). I hope he has a better evening. I'm going to cook something. I'm on a new health kick so we'll see how that goes.

Post Texas

We had a great trip to Texas. The wedding was lovely. I was nervous about giving a speech, (which is kind of ridiculous because I'm supposed to be an actress...) but Daryl said it didn't suck. We stuffed ourselves silly with barbecue and Mexican food, and the best part was that we got to eat this food with our friends and family. We got to spend time with Dawn and Kyle (soon-to-be mother and brother-in-law), and weren't planning on seeing my folks, but they happened to be in Texas this weekend, so we surprised my dad with a visit. We also got to visit with Connie and Rick (my aunt and uncle) and my cousin Jake.

Another weekend trip

He's off to the Moores' for the weekend while we head to Texas for one of my best friend's wedding. He had a good time with them while we were in Florida last weekend. Hopefully he won't come back and spitefully pee on the bed this time. He likes to ride on the train. He sits in this bag. It's the same bag we use to take him on flights:

My first trip to Florida

We have just returned from a short pre-wedding business trip to Florida. We had a wonderful time and are happy with all of the choices we've made thus far. Whew. It's kind of scary relying on the internet and blind recommendations. When we got to the little town and saw the venue, we were relieved to find that it is exactly what we had envisioned. It's cute, cozy, kind of tacky in the most charming way, and incredibly relaxed. I mean, there are hammocks hanging from trees all over the place...it doesn't get anymore relaxing than that. When we drove up, Daryl described it as "wedding camp," and I think that description fits. We definitely felt like we were on vacation the entire time and hopefully everyone else will experience that feeling too.

The vast majority of the people we encountered down there were incredibly friendly. It was refreshing. I got my suburban-retail-megastore-fix, and also my chain-restaurants-from-Texas-that-they-don't-have-in-NY fix so I was certainly happy about that. We took care of the some not so fun stuff, like renting tables and tents etc. We had lunch at the place that will be doing our catering. It's a local mom and pop seafood restaurant that has been around for 28 years. We had a fantastic lunch and then we sat around and chatted with the chef and the catering coordinator. Most of the restaurant's business comes from the wholesale division, and we got to take a behind the scenes look at all of the fresh fish...straight from the boats. The idea of seeing buckets of giant dead wouldn't normally excite me, but I'll have to admit that it was pretty cool. We saw 400 pound swordfish and a snapper that had teeth that were bigger than Larry's. So the mahi at our reception will be really fresh, guys.

The only disappointment is the realization of how hot the heat is. It's super humid, so I felt kind of gross the whole time. Sunscreen and bug spray is a must.

We're gettin' hitched one month from today! I'm so excited to see everyone and I can't wait. Although, for the first time since we've been engaged, I'm feeling (just slightly) stressed out.

Uh...do I know you?

Yesterday I walked through Times Square en route to the fashion district (I was trying to find fabric to make some napkins). I passed a guy in the street with a sandwich board (see below):
He was advertising one of the Broadway plays. As I walked by, I said, "I saw that last week. It was good." He gave me a high five. As our hands met in the air, he exclaimed, "How are you doing!?" in a very familiar way. I didn't really recognize him but I figured that maybe we'd worked together in the past on a promo. I told him I was doing great. "We worked the gym job together, right?" he asked. I have never worked a gym promotion, but I nodded as I tried to figure out when I'd met this guy. "I've been really busy," I told him. "I actually just finished a promotion in Grand Central handing out pears," I added. We chatted for a few more moments. He said that he was happy to hear that everything was going well for me. By this point I realized that I had probably never this person before, but it was too late to mention that. He seemed so sure that he knew me. Maybe our paths have crossed. Or maybe I just look like a promo person. Or maybe there's another promo chick out there that looks just like me.

Busy

My posts have been infrequent lately because I've been working a lot lately and it's just not very exciting. I've also been running around trying to complete wedding errands...which is also not too exciting. It's so soon. This weekend we are taking a trip to Florida to check out the ceremony site, etc. We weren't going to, but a few weeks ago I had a dream that everyone showed up and didn't have anywhere to sit or anything to eat. The next day I decided that it would be a good idea to visit the place, seeing as we're planning everything ourselves. We had free airline tickets that were about to expire so it worked out.

I am sad because I realize that I've reached a point in my life where I can no longer eat like a 300 pound man without consequence...unless I workout. So today I decided to start working out more diligently. We'll see how that goes.

May Day

When I was a kid, we used to leave candy on the neighbors' porches, ring the bell and run away. This is how I vaguely remember celebrating May 1st. Today I celebrated by eating of box of French macarons for dinner. They're very springy. I don't feel guilty either. I could do this more often. Maybe I'll feel differently when my dress doesn't fit in a few weeks.
