Larry Likes Oats

Daryl called me while I was at work the other day.
"Larry got into the oats. He tore the container open and spread them all around. I had to throw them away."
I was sad to hear this because a) it was a brand new container of oats, and b) he'd gone so long without stealing from the food shelf. When I got home, I was surprised to find this mess:

"Daryl, I thought you said that you threw the oats away. Why did you leave that mess on the floor?" I asked him when he came home.

"I did," he replied, "I threw the container in the trash."

The crazy thing is, the trash was upright. It didn't appear to have been disturbed at all. Our dog is a ninja, you see.

He only looks innocent:

Documentaries

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I've been watching a lot of documentaries lately. In addition to being entertaining, a well made documentary is great way to broaden your mind. I am particularly interested in the social and cultural pieces. Here are some of the films I watched recently:

1. Dear Zachary: A Letter to a son about his father- This was my favorite. While it is absolutely heartbreaking, it's also touching and hopeful. I think it's better not to know too much about this film before watching it. Just have some tissues nearby and Netflix it. It's streamable.

2. The Business of Being Born- This was recommended by a friend. I want children someday but I had never given any thought to the whole process of giving birth. This was an informative and eye opening film about the system in which babies are born in the United States. Even if you don't plan on giving birth anytime soon, or ever, I still recommend this title. We were all born.... right?

3. After Innocence- This film tells the stories of men who have been exonerated (usually from DNA evidence) and freed from prison after years of living behind bars. It is frustrating and inspiring at the same time.

4. A Certain Kind of Death- The premise of this film is: What happens to a person when they die without any next of kin? It's not as morbid as it sounds. This is a piece that systematically explains a process that happens every single day. This might not appeal to a broad audience, but I thought it was fascinating. It reiterates the fact that in the end, our stuff is just stuff and our bodies...well, you get the idea. My sister posted this quote on her blog and it's relevant here: "Whatever you want to do, do it now. For life is time and time is all there is." (Gloria Steinem)

5. Capturing The Friedmans- This film is unique because it chronicles a (dysfunctional) family during through their own home videos. It is rare to see a film with so much original footage.

6. King Corn- Two college kids plant an acre of corn and document it's journey from the field to your dinner plate. Basically, food and drink products contain a lot of corn and it's not a good thing. This was humorous and informative, but it wasn't my favorite. As far as food documentaries go, I really want to see Food Inc., but I'm putting it off because I'm afraid it will take the joy out of eating.

This is just a list of the documentaries that I've seen lately. There are so many fabulous ones out there. What are your favorites?

Miss-worthy Food

I spent the last few days in Texas, it was a super quick trip but it was wonderful to be back for a few days. The best part about going home is catching up with family and friends, and the second best part is the FOOD! I've been meaning to write this post for awhile:

Food that I Miss From Texas (in no particular order)

Chik Fil A- I get the chicken nugget kids meal with lemonade and polynesian sauce. It costs less than four bucks. Technically, there's one on the NYU campus but it's not really advertised. I found out when I was lamenting the lack of this chain in the city to Daryl, who informed me that he ate Chik Fil A every couple of weeks when he works down by NYU....wait, WHAAT? Major withholding of important information... Oh, and I forgot to tell you all about Cow Appreciation Day (you don't know what that is? neither do I). In honor of this day, (which was a few weeks back), Chik Fil A handed out free chicken sandwiches to New Yorkers on the streets and I got one! I also scored a cow shaped Pez dispenser from these people dressed as cows on a bus.

Taco Bueno- It's a fast food chain (on par with Taco Bell if you're not familiar). Is it that great? Probably not, but I crave the hard shelled taco platter with rice and beans. I'm craving it right now. In college, I ate that meal twice a week.

The Pantry- One of my favorite local restaurants located in the downtown Mckinney. I've only ever had their quiche w/tortilla soup special because that's all I ever want when I go there. They also have delicious homemade pie. My favorites are the apricot pie and the strawberries and cream pie.

San Miguel- This is a Mckinney restaurant that serves delicious Mexican food at  an amazing price. It has a lot of nostalgic history as well. Daryl particularly adores this place. He asked me to senior prom here. His signature dish is the four cheese tacos, (which is not on the menu), and this is his signature San Miguel pose. We try to make it to there every time we come home.

Steak and Shake- Another college staple; good burgers and fries. cheap. enough said.

Culvers- I love this place! Butterburgers, Custard and Cheese Curds....Mmmmmm.

La Madeleine- This is a quick service French food chain. I don't want to know how many calories are in the tomato basil soup, but it's worth it. I'm also a fan of the bowtie pasta salad, strawberries romanoff. and the all you can eat bread and jam.

Pei Wei- I love PF Changs, and this is his cheaper little brother. I would eat here weekly if we had one in the city...because I did when I lived in DFW.

Jason's Deli- Another regular food spot for me back in the day. They make a mean baked potato and I love their salad bar.

Souper Salad- Speaking of salad bars, this one is all you can eat. Up here, salad bars are sold by the pound, which is 5x more expensive (but better at controlling the gluttony, I suppose). Man, I miss this place.

Cheddars- This is a chain restaurant (a la Fridays or Applebees), but it is so inexpensive and I think it's tastier. I love it despite the fact that I worked here one summer and hated it. It was my first waiting tables job, ever.

Pappasito's- This is a Mexican food chain known for serving amazing fajitas. I waited tables here for awhile in college. It was hard. I hated the job but loved the food and still do.

Spring Creek Barbecue-  Those rolls! Those warm, buttery rolls!! Oh, and they have good barbecue, too.

Dairy Queen- I would like a Hawaiian Blizzard right now. Or maybe an Oreo one. Or a Snickers one.
Or maybe just an ice cream cone.

Manny's- This is a Mexican restaurant in Uptown Dallas that I discovered after college. I'm not sure that it had been around long before that. Two Words: Brisket Tacos. Amazing.

Blackeyed Pea- Home cooking at reasonable prices. I could eat a whole basket of their cornbread all by myself.

Fazoli's- This is an Italian fastfood chain. I don't love their pasta but they make one of my favorite sandwiches ever; a tomato and mozzarella panini on ciabatta bread. In college, I was so poor at one point that I went and recycled some cans for a few dollars in change. I had just enough quarters for a panini.

Whataburger- I get the burger and fries kids meal with a shake. Whataburger gets bonus points for providing ketchup containers with the most practical dipping design.

Jack in the Box- Another bad-for-you-but-tastes-so-good fast food joint that I frequented back in the day. I should have been enormous. Luckily I danced many, many hours a week. My body would not appreciate a fast food diet these days, but it's fun to stop in and get a bite for old time's sake, i.e., 99 cent twin tacos w/fake cheese that are soaked in grease.

Tin Star- This is another place that I discovered in adulthood. Their unlimited chip bar with corn salsa is awesome.

Blue Mesa- THE BEST BRUNCH...but only on Sundays. Sadly, we learned this when my sister and I tried to stop by before she took me to the airport on Saturday morning.

Whew! Can you think of any that I have missed? I'm sure that I've overlooked a few places. These days, we are never in Texas for longer than a week, if that; It's hard to get back to a lot of these favorites, let alone discover new ones. In recent visits, we have dined at Babes (family style comfort food) and Los Cucos (Mexican), which have become new favorites.

Stay tuned for my next restaurant run-down, which will include a list of places that I would miss in NYC if we no longer lived here.

This Week

I broke my unemployment streak by working on a film yesterday in which I was paid to eat ice cream all day. The novelty of it wore off by the 30th take, but it was really awesome for the first few hours. In other employment news, Daryl recently booked his first commercial. It shoots this week and hopefully they will decide to air it.

Long Weekend

I love America and everything, but I'd rather be in Europe like we were last year at this time...not that I'm complaining. NYC isn't a bad place to be over Fourth of July weekend:

Daryl riding our friend's bike (hence the pink helmet)

Larry enjoying a French Bulldog art exhibit at Columbus Circle/Time Warner Center.

The beach at Coney Island. It's just as gross as I'd remembered. There was a lot of glass in the sand and many err...confident sunbathers. My favorite was this 80-something-year-old man wearing a red striped speedo, over a pair of tighty whiteys. Amazing. I am a sunscreen freak...so I was horrified to come home and discover a crispy, painful, splotchy red back (thanks Daryl ;)
We didn't have any aloe, so I did some home remedy searching and found that milk (while pretty stinky) was rather effective.

Here we are with our friend, Tracy after our first ride on Deno's Wonder wheel (at Coney Island). This is the highest ferris wheel in the country.
This was the least lame ferris wheel ride I've ever been on.

You can see the wheel in the background. You can also see how classy this place is. We went to Coney Island on July 3rd, so we missed the annual hot dog eating competition. It would of been way too hot and crowded anyway.
On Sunday, we ended up having a documentary watching marathon (which I will write about later). We did venture out to see fireworks. We caught part of the Macy's show at the end of our block.

We rode Coney Island's Cyclone rollercoaster. It's really old and hurts your neck...but it's one of those things that I felt needed to happen.

And this is what Larry did all weekend. It was too hot and muggy for him to enjoy the outdoors.

Growth

My herb garden has sprouted. I'm trying my best to keep everything alive.

Funemployment

What we've been up to....

-NYC Ballet (made me want to be a ballerina...I'm pretty sure it's too late)
-2 Shakespeare in the Park shows (Al Pacino played Shylock this year in Merchant)
-Broadway Musical (Next to Normal)
-Picnics in Central Park
-Watched the entire Lost series (finished it last night...truthfully, this is what took up most of our time)
-Made lots of chicken salad and pesto
-Wii Fit

I should mention that all of these activities were FREE. This is important when you only worked 4 days in June. Seriously. It's getting to be ridiculous.
